Just as it connects house to shore, this Michigan home connects multiple generations. Built on property next door to her parents’ own vacation home – where one half of our client pair spent her childhood – it’s a clean, crisp, modern interpretation of all that’s best about lakeside life. Views, relaxation, proximity to nature, and ease of living combine in a glass box that reveals and celebrates its location at every turn. A mere handful of materials – glass, walnut, steel, plaster, and stone – form a neutral, highly textured architectural envelope that is at once contemporary and warm. Challenging notions of modern simplicity being equal to cold, interiors are suffused with luxe fabrics, cozying rugs, and a colorful – and significant – collection of art that welcomes family members to gather throughout the seasons. With a mostly monochromatic color palette informed by light studies conducted over the course of a year, Lake Michigan waters and skies are reflected in the décor, which includes custom (and flexible) furnishings, custom SHIIR rugs, and plenty of warming elements designed from the get-go to augment the home’s architectural aspects.
