Pantone’s Color of the Year: Peach Fuzz

The pronouncement has been made and our reaction is both conflicted and inspired. The Pantone Color Institute’s 2024 Color of the Year is……Peach Fuzz. Peach Fuzz? Hardly dynamic on the scale of, say, 2023’s Viva Magenta, which practically demanded attention, Peach Fuzz’s very name brings to mind the mild-mannered. And we’ll be honest: it also conjures not so fond recollections of the lilacs, seafoam greens, and, yes, peaches, that defined much of early 1980s interior design.

But the hue, as Pantone’s colors of the year often do, began to grow on us almost immediately. We thought of bellinis accompanying al fresco brunch on a sunny summer day. The incomparable Ganges sunsets we marvel over every time we visit our beloved India. Even, we quickly realized, some of our favorite projects!

In a Naples, Florida home, a mostly neutral family room is warmed by an armful of peach pillows, and a leather ottoman in a similar hue.
This colorful dining room in a single family home in Chicago features both walls and chair upholstery that riff on Peach Fuzz.
On the rooftop terrace of The Orchard, punchy pillows demonstrate the versatility of oranges tones both soft, like Peach Fuzz, or more dramatic.

Leatrice Eiseman, the Pantone Color Institute’s executive director, says, “Peach Fuzz captures our desire to nurture ourselves and others. It’s a velvety gentle peach tone whose all-embracing spirit enriches mind, body, and soul.” That’s a sentiment we can certainly get behind, as we all seek closeness and connection in a world that can seem unrecognizable at times. What better way to nourish our spirits than to surround ourselves with warmth? Peach Fuzz is “a shade that resonates with compassion, offers a tactile embrace, and effortlessly bridges the youthful with the timeless,” says Eiseman.

Indeed. We certainly recognize Peach Fuzz’s appeal and applaud its choice. Will it resonate on the scale of 2016’s Rose Quartz, commonly referred to as Millennial Pink? That remains to be seen. In the meantime, there’s already a plethora of great-looking product available to dive as deep into Peach Fuzz as you dare. As for us, we’re fairly sure we’ll at least be dipping our toes in over the course of the upcoming year.

Books hold a special place in graphic designer Juliet’s heart. “I love to read, discuss, and recommend books,” she says. “I also enjoy sharing books from my fairly large collection.” No surprise, then, that her ideal home would include plenty of shelving for her tomes. “If I wasn’t in the design world, I’d probably be a visual artist, a writer,” – and here’s what is surprising – “or maybe even an astrologer!” she says.
